What is a root canal treatment?

This procedure involves the removal of the infected nerve and bacteria from the tooth.  This is required when the nerve or blood supply of a tooth (termed the pulp) is damaged through decay or injury

What does the root canal procedure involve?

During the procedure all infection is removed from the canal system.  After the bacteria has been removed, the root canal is cleaned, shaped and filled. The tooth is then sealed with a filling or a crown.  Root canal treatment is a skilled and time consuming procedure.  Most courses of treatment can involve two or more visits.

What is the alternative?

The alternative is to have the tooth removed and replaced with a bridge, implant or denture to restore chewing function, aesthetics and prevent neighbouring teeth from moving.
